WHAT IS OUR HIGHER SELF & HOW CAN WE CONNECT WITH IT?

Our Higher Self can be described as: a philosophical concept that is acknowledged in spirituality and various other belief systems. It is frequently contrasted with the Lower Self orEego.

THE EGO

"The ego is the part of us that is engaged in self-justification" [1]

In the realms of psychology, the ego relates to the aspect of the self that:

  • Manages reality testing
  • Arbitrates between our conscious mind and our subconscious mind (the latter refers to the aspect of our mental activity which functions below our level of conscious awareness)
  • Generates a sense of personal identity [1]

THE LOWER SELF

This state of being relates elements of our personality that are fueled by:

  • Negativity (for example, resentment, jealousy, anger, self-centeredness)
  • Fear (such as being anxious about failure, or loss)
  • Desiring things in terms of being materialistic [3]
Of note, all the aforementioned aspects can be linked to the ego's more primal, unconscious, and in some instances, damaging tendencies... [3]

In Indian philosophy, the difference between the consciousness of our lower self and our higher self, is that the former: "is finite, while the consciousness of the higher self is infinite. The lower self is trapped in the cycle of rebirths and re-deaths due to the law of karma, while the higher self is free" [4]

OUR HIGHER SELF

"We can think of the higher self as an aspect or expression of the soul, but not the soul itself " [5]

Our higher self transcends normal awareness, fears and doubts - thus empowering our soul to express its true nature. Indeed, the notion of this higher form of intelligence has been understood since antiquity (ancient Egypt and ancient India are good examples, moreover, in Sanskrit texts, this postulation is frequently referred to as Ātman). In order to comprehend this concept more readily, we should be mindful that: below the exterior of our unique, restricted self, there is a profound constant multiversal spiritual energy essence that links us to everything else.

In addition to the aforementioned, our higher self can also be explained as:

  • Our individual unique essence (which is separate from our personality)
  • A link to source (the latter of which is also referred to as: the Creator, the Divine, Godhead, Great Spirit, or whatever people's personal beliefs may be in regard to the infinite force of energy that is responsible for all that is in the multiverse and beyond)
So to that end, our higher self serves as an accessible and invaluable state of consciousness that is completely detached from the physical world, materialism, and our ego [5]. - And as such, when we can tap into and align with our higher self, we can work towards, and achieve:
  • A higher vibration

  • A higher state of mind

  • Unconditional love and compassion

  • Inner peace

  • Self-awareness

  • The ability to think outside the box

  • Clarity

  • The strength to shed negative thought and blockages

  • Guidance

  • Positivity about our potential

  • A feeling of being grounded

  • A much needed source of wisdom which can empower us to have a more profound understanding of life and as such, guide us to live our best lives (inline with our soul contract/life purpose)

  • The ability to make decisions that resonate with our true values

  • An aura of spirituality, positivity, and inner strength [5]

HOW TO CONNECT WITH OUR HIGHER SELVES

There are a multitude of ways that we can link up with our higher selves, and the best course of action is to go with whatever we resonate with the most. - There is no one box fits all. Moreover, the time that it will take to attain this state varies from person to person, and from one session to another. - That is to say, that: one day we can attain a smooth and almost immediate connection to our higher self, and the next we cannot make any connection at all.

A good analogy to the aforementioned, is trying to manually tune into a radio station, sometimes we can get a brilliant reception, and other times, it is all scrambled and incoherent. - But just like meditation, and other disciplines, it takes time, and as I can personally testify, many of us have to put a lot of time into being in the right state of mind. - After all, all kinds of things that are going on can distract us from being what my Spirit Guide, the great British-American Spiritual Philosopher, Author and Speaker, Alan Watts, calls "non-thinking."

But on the bright side, there are many different and exhilarating ways to connect with our higher self. These include:

  • Various spiritual practices (prayer, OR attending an online (via Zoom) or in-person service/demonstration of mediumship at a Spiritualist church/center)

  • Meditation (either on your own, or in an online or physical group). When we enter into a meditative state, we can empower our multidimensional self, and as such, attain a state of neutrality and  non-self, and raise our vibration

  • Self-reflection

  • Attaining mind-heart coherence

  • Qigong (subject to any contraindications you may have)

  • Breathing techniques (subject to any contraindications you may have)

  • Regularly listening to a YouTube video that empowers participants to make a connection with their higher selves

  • Playing music that resonates with our innermost self

  • Singing

  • Dancing, especially ecstatic or free-form dance

  • Sitting peacefully in our own home and connecting with our inner knowing

  • Walking in nature or by the sea

  • Sitting in a park or by a lake

  • Painting or drawing

  • Doing relaxing art and crafts

  • Thinking back to a happy carefree time in our childhood. (When we do this, we can call upon several of our senses to feel as though we are reliving it)

  • Spending quality time with our dog, cat, or other pet we love

ADVICE FROM DEEPAK CHOPRA

When being questioned about finding it difficult to attain the right frame of mind to connect with our higher self, Deepak noted the following:

"It is your simple, baseline awareness that is always there beneath your thoughts, feelings, ideas and aspirations. The reason why it is so easy to overlook is because in a sense, it is quite ordinary, uncomplicated and basic. But this core consciousness is the source of everything, it is your true self, and once you are able to explore it on its own terms, that is when the real transformation of consciousness begins" [7]
