WHAT IS THEOSOPHY & DOES IT EMBRACE SPIRITUALITY FOR ALL?

"Theosophy is a mystical belief system that seeks to understand the nature of divinity and spiritual enlightenment" [1]

Theosophy is historically linked to countless interesting people. These include: Lewis Carroll, Edgar Cayce, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, William Crookes, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Immanuel Kant, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Rudolf Steiner, D. T. Suzuki, Leo Tolstoy, Oscar Wilde and William Yates.

So What is the Core of Theosophy?

The word Theosophy means Divine Wisdom (Theos is the Greek word for divine, and Sophia is the Greek word for wisdom). The Theosophical Society was founded in 1875 by three main exponents, Spiritualist medium, Madame Helena Blavatsky, Henry Steel Olcott, and William Judge.

"Theosophy promotes a nonsectarian approach to spirituality that draws heavily on Eastern philosophies, particularly Brahmanism and Tibetan Buddhism. Central to Theosophy is the exploration of multiple paths to divine experience, diverging from traditional beliefs in a singular, personal God" [1].

Madame Blatvatsky referred to Theosophy as "the accumulated wisdom of the ages." This is because Theosophy can be regarded as an ancient stream of truth that is linked to all the great faiths and philosophies of our world. These include:

Vedanta: one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy
Platonism: philosophies which attain their primary inspiration from Plato. "It is rooted in a belief in eternal, unchanging realities, which Plato called forms, that exist independently of the changing world that we perceive with our senses" [2]
Neoplatonism: "This kind of theism, issues a strongly positive view of God's creation and a nobly austere but humane view of human duty and destiny" [2]
Kabbalah: "Esoteric Jewish mysticism as it appeared in the 12th and following centuries" [2]
Esoteric Sufism: "portrays another spiritual behavior where bodies, experiences, emotions and embodiment intertwine in an esoteric path" [3]
Buddhism: a "religion and philosophy that developed from the teachings of the Buddha, a teacher who lived in northern India between the mid-6th and mid-4th centuries BCE" [2]. Buddhism radiated from India to other parts of Asia, where it facilitated a key central role in the spiritual, social and cultural life of Asia. Buddhism expanded to the West in the 20th century [2], an effort which was heavily attributed to my spirit guide, the British-American spiritual philosopher, Alan Watts (1915 to 1973). This aforementioned out of the box approach, insures that Theosophists and those interested in Theosophy, are able to view life beyond superstition and dogma. They can take an in-depth look at both our outer world and inner life, thus contemplating our world and all that lies beyond. - When this happens, they begin to gain an understanding as to:

(a) The connection between all that is (everything in the ad infinitum existence), and

(b) The equitable universal laws that govern everything (including us)

Understanding the Mysteries of Life

"Theosophy serves as a resilient framework for those seeking to explore the deeper questions of existence" [1]

As such, it takes a deep dive into the both the outer and the inner/meta-physical side of life (metaphysical relates to the branch of philosophy that examines the basic nature of existence, reality, and the connection between the non-physical and physical facets of our universe). This engages the proposition that spirit (or consciousness) is rudimentary to nature, and not simply a consequence of matter.

So when we ask ourselves what is the purpose behind life? What is our place in the universe? How was our universe born? Is it possible to live in harmony with nature and one another? - Theosophists and those interested in the subject, are able to reflect and study, by going beyond bind belief, religious, philosophical and scientific answers. - And instead, look further afield towards other approaches which have been found to hold truth and merit. Moreover, and very importantly, just as with Spiritualism, Theosophy welcomes people of all faiths, races, sex, caste, and colour. - And by doing so, seeks to form a nucleus of global unity which promotes camraderie , peace, equality, and compassionate living.
